Thursday Thirteen #6
Thirteen Things Parents Are Responsible For Teaching Their Children

(Special note to idiotic parents I see in public, on the news and read about– No, the school system is not responsible for raising your children – YOU are. And no, kids don’t pick these things up on their own. They learn by what they see you do, how you act toward them, and how you treat others. If you are an asshole, guess what? Your kids will be too. Your children are watching YOU!)

1. Manners (especially in public)

2. Kindness

3. Affection

4. Integrity, Honor and Honesty

5. Work Ethic

6. Food Choices

7. Exercise

8. How to save money

9. Reading (Yes, YOU the parent should read to your children. Every day. From an early early age. Foster their love of reading and you will raise smart kids. This isn’t hard.)

10. Respect for the world they live in

11. Respect for others

12. Self respect

13. Discipline

Dialogue

I love me some dialogue.

I love writing it. Narrative? Not so much. But my characters are into dialogue.

Angie did a great blog post on dialogue. Go read it.

I’m really careful when writing dialogue to make sure it ’sounds’ realistic, that it’s something real people would actually say. I do read it out loud.

A Taste of Surviving Demon Island

First, a stellar review from Romantic Times Bookreviews Magazine!

4 1/2 Stars and Top Pick in their January, 2007 issue!

Big applause goes to Burton for succeeding in setting up a rousing & timely premise that is a real roller coaster ride. Not only does this book set the stage for further exciting adventures, it also delivers a great group of characters that have plenty of room for growth. Burton doesn’t skimp on the sizzling sex or romance either; this book has it all! Brava!

Monday Recovery

We had a really long Thanksgiving weekend. I did NOTHING writing productive. Nada. Zip. Zero.

But I really think I needed the rest and recharge. Been burning both cylinders for months and months and I was approaching burnout.

But Charlie was off work for 5 whole days, which is extremely unusual, and I wanted to spend that time with him, not working. So we ate, we took some bike rides, did a ton of Christmas shopping, went out to eat, I cooked a turkey, we watched college football (OU Sooners won!), went to the movies and saw Deja Vu (Denzel still rocks!) and just generally relaxed. It was nice. Really nice.

This week it’s crack the whip on revisions, though. Gotta get Hunting the Demon finished and out the door.

Back to the To Do List:

1. Hunting the Demon Revisions

2. Work on Christmas Card List

3. Start wrapping gifts for shipping

4. Stalk UPS man at front door (hehehe…lots of stuff should start arriving this week. I *heart* internet shopping).

That’s it for me. What’s on your To Do list this week?

Happy Thanksgiving!

I’m so thankful for so many things. My family, my friends, especially all of you who take the time to come visit me here. I can’t tell you how much that means to me.

We’ll be heading to Charlie’s mom’s tomorrow for dinner. Kind of bittersweet since it’ll be the first holiday without his dad. But we’ll be there to support his mom. Charlie’s sister and her hubby will be there, too, but the rest of his family is kind of scattering around this year.

I always miss my boys this time of year. They’re out in California and I haven’t been able to have holidays with them for several years. Traveling at the holidays sucks though. Bleh. Happy Thanksgiving, boys! Love you!

I’ll be engaging in black Friday shopping the day after Thanksgiving. Yes, I’m insane.

To those of you traveling this holiday weekend, stay safe. Enjoy the comfort of your family and friends.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Madness

The holidays have hit and it’s insanity here.

I’ve started Christmas shopping. :hide:

Charlie and I went out to the mall yesterday, and even to Toys R Us to shop for the grandkid. (Toys R Us sucks. They have nothing in stock that I wanted. Grrrrrr). But between online shopping and some serious in person mall shopping, I’ve made some headway. Yes! :boobie:

Just have to shop a bit for the hubby and the daughter, and buy giftwrap. And get through Thanksgiving, which we’ll be doing at Charlie’s mom’s.

Not that I’m getting any freakin writing done the past few days. Which really sucks because I”m behind. Really, really, behind.

At least I’m ahead on the shopping. Can’t have everything, I suppose. :giggle:

So what about y’all? Gearing up, avoiding, done?
