Demanding Characters

tap tap

Me: Yes?

Harlee: I need sex

Me: Can’t help you

Harlee: You’re the writer. You’ve left me unsatisfied.

Me: Um, I’m working on a proposal for my agent right now. You’ll have to wait.

Harlee: I’ve been waiting a really long damn time and I’m starting to get cranky.

Me: I can tell. Wait a little longer. I don’t have time to work on your story right now.

Harlee: *glaring* My soon to be lover is a vampire. I’ll have him bite you

Me: My husband does that. Your threats are meaningless.

Harlee: Damn. *stomps foot*

Me: Diva

Harlee: Isn’t that what your publisher calls you? *smirk*

UNMASKED by C. J. Barry

Love Spell (Dorchester Publishing), June 7 2005

To the merchants he plunders, he’s the Ghost Rider of the Dead Zone. To sector law enforcement, he’s a wanted pirate. To the slaves he rescues, he’s the savior, laghato. To one determined female, Qaade Deter is serious trouble. Torrie Masters had heard of the legendary raider, but she’d never expected to encounter him. Nor would she have expected that beneath his black mask lurked an enticing man destined to challenge her in ways she couldn’t shoot her way out of. But a great threat has emerged-one that’s left no choice but for them to join forces. Entrusted with the fate of thousands, Torrie has discovered Qaade’s impossible dream. Only she has the power to help him. Only she has the power to see him UNMASKED.

Plot Pong

For those of you old enough to remember, one of the first ‘video games’ was Pong. Black and white screen, a white goal box at each side, and a ball.

Boop, boop, boop. Slowly, back and forth, you hit the pong ball. Boring as hell on the screen. Not so boring when it becomes my writing life.

I’m simultaneously working on a proposal for my agent plus my current mss for EC. And I feel like the ball in Pong.

Boop! I’ll write a few pages on the mss

Boop! Switch to working more on the proposal for awhile.

Boop! back to the mss to write a love scene.

Boop! Rework the synopsis on the proposal.

Boop! Oh I forgot to add that one part in the mss.

Boop! Maybe I should develop this conflict in the proposal in a little more depth.

Boop!

Boop!

Boop!

No wonder I’m dizzy. I hope I don’t switch character names again. *g*

The “Definition” of Romance

RWA, again in its infinite wisdom, has created a Member Survey and asked its membership to vote.

This particular reader survey is about defining romance. Here are the two choices:

A. The romantic relationship is between one man and one woman.

B. The romantic relationship is between two people.

Anybody see anything wrong with this?

It seems to me they’re trying to define something that can’t be defined. That’s like asking people to define ‘love’. Everyone has a different interepretation. To some, chick lit is romance. To some, a menage isromance. To some, two women or two men might be romance and to others it’s one man and one woman.

It’s impossible to come up with a single paragraph definition of what consitutes a ‘romance’ because everyone interprets it differently based on their own set of values.

This survey is way too limiting, and there’s no place to write in a comment or a different vote. So those who don’t send their survey response in are doomed to live with what those who voted said?

I think not. I think we should leave the interepretation of romance up to the individual. Trying to define it is impossible.

I’m Back!

Vacation was fun! We gambled, lost money, won money, lost money *g*

Spent a lot of time in the sun and at a water park which was a blast. Mississippi was HOT last week! And of course I was deluged with laundry and email catchup when I came back. Managed to write a little and work on a proposal a bit while gone, but it really is too hard to try to accomplish too much while vacationing.

While out of town Charlie and I went to see Mr. and Mrs. Smith with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Omg what a great action movie! Angelina kicked butt and really helped to wrap my mind around a character I’m plotting. Now I can’t wait to get into the plotline and characterization of this proposal! I highly recommend this movie to lovers of romance and action and adventure.

Now it’s back to work for me!

Vacation? I don’t have time for vacation!!!!!

Picture a writer with her hands up in the air, her hair sticking out and flames shooting from every pore of her body as she looks around her house and office in wide-eyed panic.

There you have it. Me, preparing to go out of town for a week.

I have a book to finish. Correction - I have a book I REALLY REALLY need to finish. I have proposals to work on. My house has been taken over by the dust bunnies, clutter creatures and dirt devils and I’m too tired to fight them off. Did I mention I had a book to finish? ;-)

Anyway, leaving town early Sunday the 12th and returning Friday the 17th. It’s actually one of Charlie’s annual work events but we’re stretching it out a couple days and taking a little vacation. It’s at a resort in Mississippi with casinos and a water park, so it really should be fun. Plus I can write on the long car trip, and maybe even *gasp* read a book *gasp*. The downtime will probably be really good for me. Sometimes it’s good to de-stress. At least that’s what they tell me ;-)

Promise to miss me, okay? *g*
